Dear Families,
My name is Mrs. McDonald and I am the fifth grade English Language Arts and History teacher at South Elementary. As in the previous year, the student’s will have two teachers for their core classes. Mrs. Potvin will be instructing the students in Math and Science. The students will be switching classes each day. They will also be having Music, Art, Technology and Physical Education.
In Unit 1 Module A in the ReadyGen Engiish Language Arts program, the genre focus in on fiction. The theme of the Module is "Depending on Each Other". There are three stories in this Module. The anchor texts is Night of the Spadefoot Toad and the accompanying stories are Shells and Hatchet. Through out the unit we will be focusing on understanding themes as they relate to character, setting and events. They will be taking short assessments to gauge their understanding throughout the Module. At the end of the Module the students will have a Performanced-Based Assessment. The students will be asked to write a short story about a character that cares about his or her surroundings.
In History we will begin by studying the first Europeans to settle on the North American Continent. I will be presenting theories to the students regarding who settled first. The students will be given notes to copy and will be tested on the information. The tests are not difficult and I tell the students exactly what will be on the test.
I look forward to a fun and productive year. If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me.
